چکیده

We report on 40 kiloseconds of ROSAT HRI observations of the globular cluster M92 (NGC 6341) and 20 kiloseconds of observations of the globular cluster M13 (NGC 6205). We find that the low-luminosity (10 erg sec at 7.5 kpc) source previously observed near the core of M92 with the ROSAT PSPC remains unresolved at HRI resolution; we can identify it with M92 with 99 per cent confidence. In M13 we find that the source seen with the ROSAT PSPC lies within the core and is possibly associated with the cluster (96 per cent confidence). We find probabilities of 99.8 per cent (M92) and 98 per cent (M13) for the presence of additional unresolved emission within these globular clusters. We interpret these results in light of current theories regarding the low-luminosity sources.

Multiple and variable X - ray sources in the globular clusters

We detect stars from the Hipparcos and Tycho Catalogues in the field of view of observations with the ROSAT HRI of three globular clusters. We use the positions of these stars to reduce the systematic error in the positions of X-ray sources in the clusters to ∼ 2′′ for ω Cen and NGC 6752, and 1′′ for NGC 6397. We detect three X-ray sources in the core of ω Cen, and four in the core of NGC 6752;...

Explaining the mass-to-light ratios of globular clusters

Context. The majority of observed mass-to-light ratios of globular clusters is too low to be explained by ‘canonical’ cluster models, in which dynamical effects are not accounted for. Moreover, these models do not reproduce a recently reported trend of increasing M/L with cluster mass, but instead predict mass-to-light ratios that are independent of cluster mass for a fixed age and metallicity....

Near - Infrared Observations of RR Lyrae variables in Galactic Globular Clusters : I . The case of M 92

We present near-infrared J,H, and K-band time series observations of the Galactic Globular Cluster (GGC) M92. On the basis of these data, we derived well-sampled light curves for eleven out of the seventeen cluster RR Lyrae variables , and in turn, accurate mean near-infrared (NIR) magnitudes. The comparison between predicted and empirical slopes of NIR Period-Luminosity (PL) relations indicate...

Investigating The Consistency of Stellar Evolution Models with Globular Cluster Observations via the Red Giant Branch Bump

Synthetic RGBB magnitudes are generated with the most recent theoretical stellar evolution models computed with the Dartmouth Stellar Evolution Program (DSEP) code. They are compared to the observational work of Nataf et al., who present RGBB magnitudes for 72 globular clusters. A DSEP model using a chemical composition with enhanced α capture [α/Fe] = +0.4 and an age of 13 Gyr shows agreement ...

Palomar 13 : a velocity dispersion inflated by binaries ? ⋆

Recently, combining radial velocities from Keck/HIRESéchelle spectra with published proper motion membership probabilities, Côté et al. (2002) observed a sample of 21 stars, probable members of Palomar 13, a globular cluster in the Galactic halo. Their projected velocity dispersion σp = 2.2 ± 0.4 km s −1 gives a mass-to-light ratio M/LV = 40 +24 −17 , about one order of magnitude larger than th...
